Fake eggs that contain a substance that causes mental retardation are being sold in the mainland China, four years after similar ones first surfaced across the border. A local in Fujian province bought some from a street vendor and thought the yolks were very bouncy after the eggs were cooked.
The realistic looking fakes contain no protein. Instead, chemicals such as alum, sodium alginate, gelatin, calcium chloride and sodium benzoate are found in them. The "yolk" is dyed with tartrazine while the eggshell is made of calcium carbonate.
The fake eggs are easy to make and cost 1 to 5 HK Cents, compared with 25 to 30 cents for real eggs. Recipes for making the fakes are widespread in mainland websites while some so called technology companies even run classes to teach people how to make them. Mahlzeit!
